Tropism

Plants grow and respond to various stimuli: gravity, moisture and light. These responses are called tropisms and are caused by special chemicals called auxins

  • A positive tropism is when the plant grows towards the stimulus
  • A negative tropism is when the plant grows away from the stimulus

Geotropism= describes gravity

Phototropism= describes light

The roots of a plant respond to moisture, their responses:

  • negative phototropism
  • positive geotropism- because it grows downwards

The shoot of a plant respond to light, their responses:

  • positive phototropism
  • negative geotropism- because it grows upwards
